  • Because clans pass their repertoire between generations, the result reframes conservation: protecting one whale means protecting a culture of speakers.

How it was done

This is a literature explainer rather than a new analysis. K-Dense synthesized the 2024 Sharma et al. results alongside the foundational vocal-clan work of Rendell and Whitehead and Gero's study of identity cues, then produced a four-page illustrated brief with a one-screen glossary of terms like coda, inter-click interval, and vocal clan. The underlying recordings come from the Dominica Sperm Whale Project, which has followed roughly 600 whales along the Lesser Antilles since 2005 using hydrophones and suction-cup DTAG recorders.

Limitations

The brief reports published findings rather than testing them independently, and the 2024 combinatorial claims rest on recordings from a single Caribbean population.
