Chegg (CHGG) Short Thesis Evaluation

Quantitative short thesis on Chegg analyzing margin erosion, cash vs. debt dynamics, revenue scenario modeling, and valuation sensitivity.

What this research found

Chegg's subscription homework-help business has been shedding revenue since generative AI chatbots arrived, and the stock now trades at 0.17 times sales. K-Dense tested whether a short position still makes sense at that price, combining 2021–2024 financials, scenario and reverse discounted cash flow models, and technical indicators into a 15-page institutional memo. It maintains the short with a base target of $0.50, the estimated liquidation value, against a $0.70 share price.

  • Revenue fell from a 2021 peak of $776M to $448M on a trailing twelve-month basis, a 42% decline, and the annual contraction has accelerated every year: -1.2% in 2022, -6.6% in 2023 and -13.8% in 2024.
  • Net profit margin reached -135.5% in 2024, driven by a $677M goodwill impairment, while operating margin swung from a 10.1% peak in 2022 to -9.7%. Gross margin held up far better, slipping only from 74.3% to 70.7%.
  • At an enterprise value of $63.4M the market already implies -35.1% perpetual growth. Scenario cash flows at an 11% cost of capital give $2.91 per share on stabilisation (15% probability), $0.92 on continued decline (50%) and $0.12 under accelerated AI disruption (35%), a probability-weighted $0.94, with liquidation value at $0.50.
  • The balance sheet is not the near-term risk: $96.4M of cash against $83.0M of debt leaves $13.4M net cash, and free cash flow was still positive at $50.3M in 2024, down from $179.0M in 2021. A current ratio of 0.95 nonetheless leaves short-term liabilities above liquid assets.
  • The CheggMate AI pivot was judged not credible on spending alone, at roughly $170M of research and development against the $10B-plus committed by OpenAI. Squeeze risk is moderate with 5.9% of float short and 5.66 days to cover, and a privatisation bid would put a floor of $1.40 to $1.83 on the stock.

How it was done

Annual and quarterly financials from 2021 through 2024 were assembled into revenue, margin, liquidity and cash-flow trend series, then fed into a discounted cash flow model at an 11% weighted average cost of capital with bull, base and bear revenue paths running to 2029. The model was also run in reverse to derive the perpetual growth rate implied by the current enterprise value, and cross-checked against book value and an estimated liquidation value. Supporting strands covered short interest and ownership structure, moving-average and RSI technicals, sentiment on the CheggMate AI product, and a privatisation scenario built from EBITDA multiples. The result was a 15-page memo with eight figures and explicit entry, stop-loss and position-sizing parameters.

  • Chegg 2024 annual report — $677M goodwill impairment
  • Market data — $0.70 share price, $76.7M market cap, 109.3M shares outstanding, 52-week range $0.44 to $1.90
  • Short interest data — 6,309,255 shares short, 5.66 days to cover, 5.9% of float
  • App store ratings and user sentiment for the CheggMate product

Limitations

The financial figures may lag the most recent quarterly results, and the CheggMate assessment rests on app store ratings and general sentiment rather than primary user research. Coverage also centres on US market dynamics rather than the international subscriber base.
